6:41 pm - 2012
What a crazy and fun year... too much to list which reiterates why I should update this more often... instead some random updates....

The year was going well until I got attacked by a snow shark in my garden...

In the summer we had an epic road trip to Cornwall via all the back roads and National Parks

I got invited to help lead the Maldon Carnival out into the town which was awesome

I did various car shows and events

Including a massive geek fest at a space museum which was a lot of fun... we even had helper apes

And the Galactic Empire helped keep law and order

But above all, 2 things that really stand out above have to be firstly the archery and secondly the Resident Evil! The archery started by having a go at a medieval fair in the historical town of Colchester. I had always wanted to shoot with a long bow and joined a small club as a result. I started on a 65lb bow and Kate started with a 40lb one. I'm now shooting with an 80lb bow and am working up to buying my own which I hope will be between 100 and 120lb. We shoot at 3 different medieval stands; distance of over 150 yards; accuracy being able to hit a target the size of a bracelet; and speed - at least 12 arrows a minute.

We made this video to show off:

So back to the Resident Evil.. I got asked to bring my Sheriff car to an abandoned shopping mall for an undisclosed filming project that we were told would be fore a popular computer game series that involved zombies. Hmmm no secret there then! It was an official Capcom project and 23 hours worth of filming followed with various scenes of me dressed as a local sheriff with my car dispatching various zombies. We filmed inside, outside and on the roof of the mall where over 100 people were professionally made up (using liquid latex etc) as the walking dead.

And here is the finished cut... they left so much out but we are assured that there will be a "directors cut" soon...

This resulted me learning some tips and ended with a fantastic idea to dress as a zombie Nazi for Halloween... "Dead Snow" style! Contraversial; maybe, fun; yes!

SS Zombie is thirsty

So that's it - an epic year. Bring on 2013!

6:50 pm - Wettest summer ever
The British are known for talking about the weather "good day to you sir, lovely weather that we are having isn't it?" No actually it isn't, it is bloody horrible. From the moment that the water companies all announced that due to the unusually dry winter that we had, that we were now in drought conditions and that we couldn't wash our cars or specifically Harley Davidsons with a hose pipe, it has done nothing but rain every day since April. I cannot recall a summer where I have had to go out with a rain coat every day, where a jumper is a good idea and where my motorbike has remained so damned dirty.

Even the dog has had enough and would prefer to stay indoors sleeping until the sun comes out.

I've spent the last week off work on some well deserved leave and have next week to look forward to and enjoy. As it is still raining outside I have finally plumbed the dishwasher in so that it works (it only took me 2 years!) so now I never have to do the washing up again! At least that is one good thing to come out of this rain.

8:51 pm - Blakey dog!
Well we went and did it - the home inspection went well, we had our fences completely replaced and now we have a home covered in white hair...

He has been with us for a week now and has settled in really well - no mess, no stress and no destruction. He has come out with me for work and has slept for most of his time in the house.

Here's a snap of him watching the sun set last week...

4:20 pm - Very exciting!
This is Blake and if all goes well, he could be coming home with us in a couple of week!

Isn't he cool??? He is a husky/german shepherd mix and about 2 years old. Don't know any history on him as he was a stray but he is so gentle and friendly - we can't wait.

8:23 pm - Top Gear report!
We left Wednesday morning to head to Dunsfold Airfield. The journy was about 2 hours going by Bing Maps but what with all the flooding we left early and got there very early. No problem - lunch at a pub called "The Mucky Duck" seemed the right way to go before heading back to the airfield. Tickets at the ready the security guard met us and asked "are you here for Top Gear"? Yes of course was the answer only to be told we were at the wrong gate and he promptly gave us instructions to find the correct one. As we were turning around we spied Hammond's "canal boat" camper van parked up in the corner. Makes you wonder what they do with them after the show.

Anyway at the right gate this time we joined the line of cars waiting before being parked up and given strict instructions to stay where we were until further notice - we put on our issued arm bands with much excitement!

Marcus, Kate (at the back) and Lou (who got us the tickets).

We had been told to be there by 13:30 but we didn't actually get into the studio until after 14:00. We had a nice view of the Top Gear track though and although we heard the ocassional tyre screach sadly we couldn't see anything (if there was anything) going on. On reaching the studio the Hilux was the first thing that we saw - not quite what you see on the tv or maybe that should be what you don't see? The stand it is on is clearly used by the BBC to stash all their spare boxes, cables etc.

7:59 pm - Top Gear
I haven't posted for a while but tomorrow I am going to see Top Gear get filmed! We scored ticket which normally have about a 9 year waiting list so at 13:30pm tomorrow we will be hanging out with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. How cool is that?

2:17 pm - Is it over yet?
The sun is actually out so could this be the end of one of the longest, coldest winters ever??

I have a week off from work and as said sun is shining and Mr Jack needs some more mice, I jumped on the Harley and ran into town. THe Harley has been sitting in the garage throughout the whole winter and as usual I have been bad not started her up at all during this time. However she fired right up on the button and before I knew it we were off - I guess that these cop bikes have to behave like that as when a police officer wants to chase after that speeding car, he expects that bike to go.

Now I am thinking about what to do next - I have fixed the gate at the bottom of the garden so it opens, closes and locks correctly so I might clean out the garage next.

We are heading to Yorkshire tomorrow morning so I am hoping that the weather holds for that!

5:38 pm - Sleep well little husky :(
I don't like posting sad stuff but the other day one of the dogs I help train had to be put to sleep. I have been training sled dogs for years but in the last 6 years I had been just helping out a local guy with his small kennel. I can't help but get close to the dogs and as I have been there since they were fairly young, I love them like my own.

Cairn, a pure bred Siberian Husky, was my favourite as he always had a big goofy smile and his best trick would be to run through your legs to cover you in white fur. But most importantly he was a true working dog, not just a companion but a colleague you could trust. He was powerful and with his head down, his ears tipped back to listen to you, he would pull the rig or quad to give it everything he had. Usually he was a wheel dog however he would work lead if needed but he didn't mind as long as he could run.

A t.v. show that Kate liked once said that when dogs die, they go to a place where they can run all day and at night, they return to sleep at their masters feet. I was never his owner but I hope that this is true.

RIP boy, I miss you already and training will never be the same without you.

1:27 pm - Winter madness
It is January, it is snowing outside and we have decided to have a BBQ for a house warming party. I am sticking two fingers up and saying "up yours" to winter as it won't get in the way of my hot weather fun!

Oh and speaking of snow - I had a second go this year and feel I have improved on last year's design... oh and he is life size too

Next time we get snow I am making a T Rex

11:19 pm - Well
Since my last entry we are now all moved in and I have internets back. The computer is set up and we are getting stuff where we want it. Since buying a house we have had the garage completely renovated with a new roof, doors, windows etc and the second ceiling has been re-plastered. Now we are waiting for the wiring to be completed before we can start to decorate.

It does mean that I have a change of address so if anyone would like it (completely un-related to Christmas cards) please send me an email at fluke@theicecave.org and I will furnish you with the updated details.
